4 Features to Consider in Graphic Overlay Design
Graphic overlays are completely customised to your requirements, which means each design is bespoke. A graphic overlay is manufactured to your specifications, and there are a wealth of design options available which can be confusing to say the least. If you’re not an expert in engineering or interface design for membrane keypads, it can all be a little overwhelming – but our team are on hand to discuss the options and offer impartial advice and expertise.
Designing the perfect graphic overlay for your application can be tricky, but with our recommendations we’ll make sure your design is optimised for its function. It’s about striking the perfect balance between functionality and user-friendly design. Here are the top four design features to consider when ordering graphic overlays.
1. Most suitable material
You don’t have to waste time researching the best materials for graphic overlay manufacture, as we’ve selected the best of the best. However, it’s important to choose a material which is suitable for the product and its usage. For example, certain materials offer a higher performance and durability than others, although resilience isn’t always a top priority for some designs. If you’re not sure what the differences are between polyester, PVC, vinyl or polycarbonate, then have a chat with a member of our technical team.
The tactility of the buttons can play a significant part in the keyboard’s ability to be user-friendly. A range of embossing options are available such as pillow and dome buttons, which can give tactile feedback. The quality of embossing has increased in recent years and opened up opportunities for better designs and practical keypads.
3. Shielding and Circuitry
Circuitry and shielding refers to what’s happening underneath the overlay, but it’s still a critical part of the design. There needs to be sufficient space in between the keys for the electrics to work consistently, but the technical team can advise if your initial design will need to be altered.
In the majority of cases you will require some sort of lighting within the graphic overlay. General backlighting with the utilisation of EL or LEDs can be implemented as standard, or you can also choose from secret legends and graphics which only light up when pressed. This is great in environments where the lighting may be low, or to emphasise certain keys.
