The use of serialization to track and trace your products
To track the distribution of products throughout the supply chain, mass serialization techniques such as barcodes and custom codes are used.
These codes are placed on packaging and labels, giving each product a unique sequential number or alphanumeric serialization. After the codes are attached to a product, they are registered online so they can be easily identified every step of their journey.
This track and trace technology can help locate products in the instance of a product recall, allowing products to be recalled precisely, avoiding to need of a general recall of all products that can be very costly.
The use of mass serialization also allows for better inventory visibility, allowing you to predict when and where products will need to be replenished, allowing inventory to be efficiently and effectively maintained.
Other benefits of using mass serialization are:
- The management of product expiration dates - the serialization number can be used to determine the end-of-life for products with a limited shelf-life.
- Logistics – data acquired from the tracking of products through the supply chain can be used to improve the end-to-end processes.
- Protect against unauthorized sale of products – the use of serialization can help protect against products being diverted from an authorized distribution channel or being imported into a country for unapproved sale.
