We have PGDQ2 UL Approval: What does this mean?
PGDQ2 is the highest level of UL certification that label manufacturers can obtain. Before being accredited with this certification, the label manufacturer must get everything from printing materials to the printing system approved as a complete process.
At Fascia Graphics® we have been accredited with the PGDQ2 standard, meaning we can supply UL approved labels and graphic overlays to PGAA and PGDQ2 approvals. The PGDQ2 approval is typically used for applications that are required to stay legible for the full life of the product they are adhered to.
Before PGDQ2 accreditation can be given, the products performance must be evaluated under UL 969. The manufacturer sends a printed sample of the exact material and adhesive combination that they require UL approval for. The UL engineer then undergoes a series of tests (such as the rub test detailed below), that are dependent on the end-use application specified by the manufacturer.
Products requiring PGDQ2 approval are typically required to comply with a marking durability rub test that examines the label or overlay for legibility and adhesion after they are exposed to a variety of liquids and chemicals through controlled rub tests. These substances and the sequence in which they are applied differ amongst the standards, and so prior to testing UL must be informed of the specific standards the product is to be evaluated against.
By having the parts tested before they are adhered to the end product has the advantage of ensuring that the label or overlay fully complies with UL standard in advance to application, adding confidence to the supply chain integrity.
