What type of nameplate design should you choose?

What type of nameplate design should you choose?

Designing a nameplate is not easy. A nameplate can say so much about a company, a brand or a product. Announcing your brand or company to the world is as much an essential element in your business marketing as the product(s) or service(s) on offer.

How important is good design?

Ask the originators of the Shell, Coke, Pepsi, Mercedes and BMW signage. Brands that can be recognised by their logo or nameplate have a distinct advantage over brands which cannot. It is essential to have something that stands out from the crowd. If your business is a startup or is re-branding, design is critical.

Colour combination

This is also another important consideration. If you are using the nameplate to promote your company, it has to reflect the colours of your brand. People will easily remember your company if they can see the colours even from a distance. If you are using acrylic or glass as the material in which the designs are to be placed, the colours should be vibrant, or they will not stand out.

Type of information

In a nutshell! Space is limited. The ratio of words, the size and typeface need to complement each other. Whether it is a metal, glass or vinyl composite nameplate, the wording and any numbers will need to be clear, concise and easily readable. Oh yes, and catch the eye so people will want to read it.

Type of material

Will the nameplate be displayed on the outside of the building, is the building modern or is the architecture from an earlier era such as Victorian, Georgian or Edwardian? Will the nameplate be continuously exposed to the elements or will it be sheltered? Is the nameplate going to be displayed inside the building? These and several other factors will dictate the type of nameplate best suited to the environment in which it will be displayed.

Focus on marketing

Using the right marketing tools is crucial to success. Nameplates are no less of a marketing tool. Nameplates are passive advertising, the first face of the company, brand or product.

A nameplate should catch the eye but not in an aggressive manner. It should reflect the industry or commercial sector in which the brand or company operates. Will the nameplate be backlit, front lit or use natural light for display?

How you intend marketing the brand will have an impact on the end design, the materials used and where the nameplate will be displayed.
