Why use a PCB with a Membrane Switch?

Why use a PCB with a Membrane Switch?

A printed circuit board, otherwise known as PCB is typically made of a copper clad cloth or fibre material infused with a resin material. An acid resistant mask is screen printed on the copper clad and then the exposed sections are etched away using acid.

To protect the exposed copper pathways from corrosion, they are plated with various metals. Gold plating is required on many PCBs in critical applications. PCBs with gold plated switch contact pads and gold plated dome switches improve reliability, such as: longer operating life, lower switch resistance and contact bounce.

A PCB Membrane Switch also allows the electronic components to be ‘hard-soldered’ onto the PCB, providing structural support.

Although PCB Switches are usually more expensive than Silver Flex Membrane Switches, they can accommodate more complex and dense circuit patterns and perform much better in applications where temperature range, vibration, and shock may occur.
